1. What first inspired you to write this particular story?
I read a newspaper article about a museum that was officially designating the Roman emperor Elagabalus as transgender. When I looked into the matter, and the character, I found her so interesting that I decided to make a Lush of her.
2. How did you come up with these characters?
Elagabalus is a real historical figure, as is his formidable mother Julia. The court historian narrator was my invention. Journalists as we think of them didnt exist then, so I needed a character who would plausibly have access to the emperor and his court. I settled on a
historian gathering notes for an official history .
3. How does it differ from some of your other stories?
Elagabalus is the heart of the story and yet she only appears in two scenes. Many of my stories are first person or second person but focussed on a hero or heroine. In this story, the character is discussed and revealed largely by other people.
4. What was the most challenging thing about writing this story?
Trying to think like a Roman, not.someone from our time. I didnt want the characters to be ambassadors from todays regrettable culture wars.
5. Anything else you want to tell us about it?
It won a recommended read from the moderator. Having researched Elagabalus, I am still not sure if she was a reckless hedonist or a prisoner of circumstance and her time. Was she villain or victim? Perhaps neither, perhaps both.
